Rescue to Livelihoods

From Slaughter to Survival to Livelihood

Rescuing calves. Recognising indigenous knowledge. Strengthening tribal livelihoods.

Nilam rescues calves destined for slaughter from butchers’ premises and gives them a safe beginning with tribal caregivers experienced in indigenous cattle rearing. As the calves mature, Nilam donates suitable adult cows to participating tribal families to support agriculture, manure preparation and, where available, milk for household use or sale.

Why We Rescue

Seeing healthy cattle sent towards slaughter when their economic value declined inspired the beginning of Nilam. It raised a question:

Does an animal’s right to live depend only on what it produces for us?

From Rescue to Restoring

Connecting cattle, community and land.

01

Local Fodder

Local fodder nourishes cattle.

02

Manure

Their manure enriches the soil.

03

Soil & Crops

The soil supports crops and future fodder.

This relationship connects animal care with indigenous knowledge and agricultural livelihoods, helping families build on the skills and resources they already possess.

The Journey

  1. 01

    A Safe Beginning

Set within a mango grove in Kadavur, Madurai, the Nilam Cow Sanctuary provides a refuge where rescued calves and cattle can recover and grow.

  2. 02

    Indigenous Care and Integration

Tribal caregivers nurture the animals through knowledge passed down across generations, with veterinary support when needed. Daily interaction helps the calves become familiar with their caregivers, build trust and gradually integrate into tribal family life.

Our collaboration with communities around Alagar Kovil recognises their cattle-rearing skills and connects rescued animals with local resources and agricultural traditions.

  3. 03

    Growing into Livelihoods

As the calves mature, Nilam donates suitable adult cows to participating families who are willing and able to provide continuing care.

The cows support farming through manure that enriches the soil, while compost and other manure-based agricultural inputs can be prepared for household use or sale. Where milk is available, it contributes to family nutrition and income.

Each placement considers the animal’s wellbeing and the family’s access to fodder, shelter and ongoing care.

Lifelong Dignity

Care continues throughout the animal’s life, including when milk production declines. Its right to safety and dignity does not depend on productivity.

Support the Journey

Help rescued calves find safety, lasting care and a place within tribal family life.
